#11 Monday Note: Music, Football, and AI (just awesome).

My son is an avid football player and enthusiast. We often find ourselves deeply engrossed in discussions about various aspects of football. This weekend we ended up talking about songs that fans are singing during the game or the ones that are used to create great atmosphere during the event. My son is a fan of Man City, so Blue Moon is on top of his list. My favourite one is Seven Nation Army. I just love The White Stripes, but there’s more to it as Jack White says:

“I am honored that the Italians have adopted this song as their own. Nothing is more beautiful in music than when people embrace a melody and allow it to enter the pantheon of folk music.”

Clearly, songs form an integral part of football culture. This led us to ponder what song could represent my son’s team. We considered themes, ideas, and styles. There was only one problem, we did not know how to compose nor play a song.

Enter AI.
“What would you think if I sang out of tune?
Would you stand up and walk out on me?
Lend me your ears and I’ll sing you a song
And I’ll try not to sing out of key”*

With a little help from our friends Generative AI and Suno we were able to create a demo of the team song in just one hour. We were both blown away how amazing this is. We created several versions of the song, tweaked lyrics, tried to come up with Rick Rubin level producer prompts and so on. It was great fun. Quite amazingly AI could e.g. somehow get “Green yellow” into lyrics, even though the colours of the team were not mentioned in the prompt. Most importantly we now have a decent demo and we can improve, and maybe even convince somebody with musical talent to make it really good.

While we have some artistic disagreements with my son about the style, genre etc. I think this italomix version really nails it!
